Your community has put a great deal of time, effort, and money into acquiring and setting up fire fighting equipment, but it’s all for nothing if we don’t have a solid group of volunteers who know how to use it. Access to the Fire and Safety Supplies Trailer and its contents is only provided to those who are registered, trained, and approved to use the equipment. As a reminder, we are outside of an RDEK fire protection area, so in the event of a fire, no outside help is coming — local fire suppression and protection of our residential properties is 100% dependent on community volunteers.
If you are willing and able to operate fire suppression equipment in the case of a local fire emergency, please be sure to attend one of these sessions. If you have already attended a training session, this is a good opportunity to review and practice what you’ve previously learned.
Rene Lavoie continues to head up our volunteer fire brigade and ongoing training, and has kindly put forward a set of proposed dates for upcoming Fire Hydrant Training sessions.
Saturday, September 12 & Sunday, September 13
- •First session — 10:00 am
- •Second session — 11:00 am
- •Location: At the Fire and First Aid Supplies Trailer, near the marina entrance
Training Includes (45 minutes per session)
- •Review of the AED cabinet near the marina
- •Location of keys for the Fire and Safety Supplies trailer — as a safeguard for the contents, only trained homeowners will be made aware of the key location
- •Review of the equipment inventory in the Fire and Safety Supplies trailer
- •Hydrant parts description
- •Safety in hydrant operation — opening and shut-down procedures
- •Physically opening main and secondary gate valves at the hydrant, in the correct sequence
- •Attaching valves, hoses, and nozzles, and applying water pressure
- •Every person will experience holding the hose and nozzle while spraying high-pressure water
- •Demonstrating the buddy system when deploying high-pressure water
- •Description of spray nozzles and the purpose of varying spray patterns
- •Spouses are encouraged to participate in the training
